In the Rockies' clubhouse last week, Huston Street smiled at the mention of his father, James.

"I just got off the phone with him," the Rockies' closer said. "We were talking about my little brothers and about his business. He really has become one of my best friends, and I'm always learning from him." | Read story

Obama on Fatherhood: 'My Hardest, But Always My Most Rewarding Job'

In his weekly address, President Obama reflected on fatherhood, calling it “my hardest, but always my most rewarding job.”

The president detailed how the absence of his own father has inspired him to be a better parent.

“I grew up without my father around," he said. "He left when I was two years old, and even though my sister and I were lucky enough to have a wonderful mother and caring grandparents to raise us, I felt his absence. And I wonder what my life would have been like had he been a greater presence. That’s why I’ve tried so hard to be a good dad for my own children.” | Read story

Don't repeat my mistakes

In a cinder-block room plastered with motivational posters, Peter Reno puts an unusual twist on what it means to be a role model.

At 38, Reno doesn’t have a job, status or money.

What he has to offer are his mistakes — and the hope that his four children will learn from them rather than end up like their dad, a recovering drug addict counting the days in his fourth prison term in 15 years. | Read story

Dad, mom, in home is essential

Americans strongly believe that having a father and a mother in the home is essential to a child’s happiness, although a significant minority of the nation’s children still live at least part of their formative years without their fathers in the home.

Findings like these galvanize the “responsible fatherhood” movement to investigate ways to improve men’s relationships with the mothers of their children and their children. | Read story

America's tale of 2 different dads

A tale of two different fathers has emerged in America: Those who regularly participate in their children's everyday lives and those who live apart from their kids, according to a study released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center.

"On the one hand, fathers who live with their kids seem to be far more actively involved with their kids than they were 50 years ago," says Gretchen Livingston, the lead author of the Pew study.

"But at the same time, the share of dads living apart from their children has more than doubled" since 1960. | Read story

A Tribute to 'Dad'

As cliché as it may sound, I truly believe that “any man can be a father, but it takes a special person to be a dad.” Being a part of American Humane Association’s Fatherhood Initiative, which helps connect children involved with the child welfare system with their dads and paternal kin, reinforces for me this distinction and the great influence my Dad has in my life.

I feel beyond fortunate to have two very loving and supportive parents — and even more aunts, uncles, grandparents, and close family friends who have provided additional encouragement and love to me throughout the years. Yet, there is something special about the “daddy-daughter” relationship, as we know that dads contribute in unique ways to the development of their children. So, in honor of Father’s Day, I wanted to take the time to reflect on the influence my Dad has on me by sharing some of the life lessons I’ve learned from him. | Read story

New Data: Rates of Father Absence Flat, Negative Effects Remain the Same

National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) has released the sixth edition of its flagship research book, Father Facts, and the new data continues to tell the same story: too many children in America live apart from their dads, and they face serious risks as a result.

With 100 pages of the latest facts and figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, academic research journals, and government studies, Father Facts, Sixth Edition reveals that NFI's most basic measure of the state of fatherhood in America – the proportion of children who live in a home in which their own father does not live – remains at one in three, translating to over 24 million children nationwide. Moreover, the rate in the African American community is closer to two in three. These rates have been roughly the same for the last decade despite a small decrease in the mid-2000s. | Read story
