Dads' role in education trumpeted

Dads everywhere are being called out to get more involved in their children's lives, especially when it comes to education.

A forum in Manchester on Wednesday focused on the importance of fatherhood in the development of children. The town-hall style discussion was part of a federal National Conversation on Fatherhood initiative, which was launched at the White House on Father's Day.

It branched out with a forum in Chicago in August and continued with Wednesday's discussion in Manchester. | Read story

Award Winning Documentary "Daddy Hunger" Draws Huge Crowds

When Rich Batten, Colorado’s Family and Fatherhood Specialist, and Manager of Colorado’s Community Access Grant, decided to show “Daddy Hunger,” he chose the Shadow Theatre thinking that the “smaller venue” would hold the expected 100 people. Never did he imagine that the 190 capacity theatre in Aurora would have a line going out the front door, and that some people would be turned away from the “standing room only” crowd. Since that showing, the award winning documentary has been shown to several different crowds throughout the Denver area and seems to be receiving great reviews. | View PDF

Dads should grab Thursday's chance to walk with their kids

It is possible to raise a child without a father in the picture.

But to paraphrase (since this is a family newspaper) comedian Chris Rock: You can drive a car with your feet, too. But that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Study after study has shown that fathers play a seminal role in raising children who succeed academically and socially. | Read story

Pilot moonlights as father to 47

At Roslin Orphanage, children giggle through deep concentration as they try to master the "Chicken Dance." It's a far cry from the Indonesian orphans' earlier months and years.

"They are cheerful-looking and photogenic, but close to all have a very sad story," said Budi Soehardi, founder of the West Timor orphanage.

"Some of the babies come because a mother passes away right after delivery because of lack of nutrition. Others come from extreme poverty. Some come from families [that] just do not want the children and abandon them," he said.

Soehardi, a 53-year-old Indonesian pilot living in Singapore, and his wife, Peggy, look after 47 children at the orphanage. They have a personal relationship with each one, and consider them part of their family. The couple named many of the children since they entered the orphanage as babies -- some of them tiny victims and refugees from the conflict in East Timor. | Read story

CU's Burton also learning fatherhood, life skills

Every football player — college, pro or high school — has his game-day ritual. Some escape to headphone heaven. Others meditate, take a long nap or overload on carbs.

Then there's CU inside linebacker Marcus Burton. What does he plan on doing Sunday in the hours before the Buffs get it on with in-state rival CSU late in the afternoon?

"I'm going to change diapers," Burton said. "I don't really have a choice in that matter, you know?" | Read story

For kids' sake, don't discourage dad's involvement

As someone who is a child advocate and works with the Indiana General Assembly to help make Indiana's laws more child-friendly, I'm not surprised to see Indiana rank 31st in the 2009 Kids Count Survey.

Although there are some family dynamics over which we have little control, there is a much greater ability for us to formulate policies that could benefit children. | Read story

The Role of Faith-Based and Community Organizations in Fatherhood and Healthy Marriage Task Force

This task force focuses on reforming policies, especially at the state level, that promote healthy families and fatherhood and devising national information campaigns to promote responsible fatherhood. The task force has selected the following focus areas: seeking uniform state administrative systems to help fathers pay child support, launching fatherhood ad campaigns and holding informational town hall meetings. For example, the task force will work with government officials to hold regional town hall meetings to provide information and inspirational messages on mentoring and parenting, to identify partners for providing assistance and to hear the needs of parents. | Read story
