Fathers are necessary role models

Father's Day is one of my favorite holidays. Some people might write this day off as just another of those contrived holidays like National Talk Like a Pirate Day or National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day. For me, Father's Day brings a sense of excitement and anticipation that can only be described as a cross between the present opening frenzy of Christmas morning and the post trick-or-treating sugar high of Halloween. This is the day that I am officially recognized for the most important role I will ever have in life. This is the day that I reaffirm my commitment to my greatest asset in life — my child.

Sadly, not all kids will have a father or father figure to celebrate with this year. Currently, more than 25 million American children are living without their fathers. National studies show that fathers are more important to the healthy development of their kids than once realized. Kids who grow up without a father or father figure in their lives are more likely to live in poverty, have troubles in school and even commit crimes. Now more than ever it is important to recognize the crucial role a father plays in the lives of his children | Read story

100th Anniversary of Fatherhood Marks Local and National Commitment to Paternal Involvement

The first of 100 Father’s Days took place on June 19, 1910 when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington decided to honor her father. William Jackson Smart was a civil war veteran, a widower and single father to Dodd and her five siblings. Without his involvement, who knows what would have happened to Dodd and this national holiday. Sunday, June 21, 2009 will mark the 100th anniversary of Father’s Day and never before has the role of responsible fathers been more important.

Currently, 25 million American children are living apart from their fathers including two-thirds of African-American children. According to national research, children who grow up without fathers are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of school and 20 times more likely to end up in prison. Yet, as these grim statistics mount, a national trend is brewing to celebrate and encourage responsible fatherhood. | Read story
