The Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) is the second largest agency in Colorado State Government, with a $1.8 billion budget for state fiscal year 2006.
CDHS oversees the state’s 64 county departments of social/human services, the state’s public mental health system, Colorado’s system of services for people with developmental disabilities, the state’s juvenile corrections system and all state and veterans’ nursing homes, through more than 5,000 employees and thousands of community-based service providers.
Colorado has a state-supervised, county-administered system for the traditional social services, including programs such as public assistance and child welfare services. Click here to find the location and telephone number of your county department of social/human services.
The Colorado Works Division of CDHS is the primary link between the county departments of social services and the federal government on issues regarding welfare reform. The Division also works closely with other Divisions and Offices within the Department, other state agencies, the General Assembly, the Governor’s Office and client advocacy organizations in the implementation of welfare reform, healthy marriage/relationship and responsible fatherhood initiatives under TANF.
